I love Dark Souls III

I love Dark Souls III. I've 100% completed it so that should tell you something. I've also already gotten the platinum trophy for Bloodborne, the platinum trophy for Dark Souls II: SotFS, and received 100% on the Steam version of Dark Souls all before this third installment. I love these games with a passion. So why on Earth would I not recommend this game?

Well, it's not because of the game itself, which is an absolute joy to play. No, the problem lies with FROM themselves and how they're acting regarding bans. You see, the PC versions of the Dark Souls games have for a long time suffered from cheaters. They make themselves invincible, invisible, give themselves powerful weapons and the items necessary to upgrade them to max. Now, of course, this problem needs to be fought, but FROM decided to make the issue a bigger problem because the following things can lead to you banned:

• If you play on PC and suffer crashes, that may invalidate your data which leads to a ban.
• If you use a PS4 controller to play on PC, the program allowing you to use said controller may invalidate your data which leads to a ban.
• Use a program to force borderless fullscreen window because the game for some reason doesn't include that naturally? Well, it can invalidate your data which leads to a ban.
• Unknowingly pick up a hacked item when you perform a trade? Invalid data. Ban.
• Encounter a cheater in PvP? Invalid data. Ban.

What this has lead to is thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of players getting banned for no legitimate reason, I included. To make this even worse is FROM's response regarding those non-cheaters caught in the ban wave.

You see, at first, we received a popup warning of invalid data in our game and to remove it or face being banned. There was just one problem: It couldn't be deleted. Even uninstalling the game and deleting the save data did nothing. Upon re-installing the popup would still be there. Did FROM address the concerns of the players regarding this confusion? Nope. All we got was silence. Players just hoped it was a mass warning and not specifically targeting them.

Then that popup changed to "You have been penalized". The player base was - and still is - furious. Legitimate players were suddenly banned from online play while actual cheaters were still running rampant. The latest example of this involved one cheater named "Malcolm Reynolds" streaming his endeavors for hours causing legitimate players to be banned. Finally, FROM responded to the furor, but their response just made us even angrier. To paraphrase they stated that 'Picking up a hacked item is "taking candy from strangers" and it's your fault for picking it up, even though we realize you cannot identify what the item is until you do pick it up. Oh, and you should be using cloud storage for your saved to create backups, even though we do not offer that service.'. Bravo FROM...

Oh, and FROM do not undo bans.

So here's my advice to you. If you can play Dark Souls III on a console, DO SO! It's a fantastic game. Sure you'll be playing at 30fps as opposed to the potential 60fps on PC, but the game is visually identical on all platforms, and you can enjoy online play without having to deal with cheaters or bans on the console. If you ONLY have a PC then avoid this game until the day FROM realizes that punishing their fans is not a very good thing to do. This review will stay a "Not Resommended" until that day arrives.
